Sports: Badminton

The Tire Recycle Urban Athletes of the Week is Joely Valencerina of the Vincent Massey Trojans badminton team.

This dynamic badminton player won the girls singles at the Louis Riel tournament, silver in mixed doubles at the Maples tournament and along with partner Cassandra Bosc have won all their WWAC seeding tournament games in girls doubles.  Coach Joanne Goodwin states, “Joely is a most dedicated player and a team leader on and off of the court.  She plays for the love of the game and continually strives to improve in all areas. Joely has been training for girls' doubles all season. Upon learning her doubles partner was unable to play in two of our tournaments, she jumped at the chance to play mixed in one and singles in the other. She put a great deal of work into preparing to compete in singles. Her work paid off when she won the girls' singles championships in the Louis Riel Varsity Badminton Tournament. Joely's strengths are her work ethic, fitness, and mental toughness. She is a pleasure to work with.”

This grade 12 student maintains a 98% average, while also competing in volleyball and track.
