Manitoba's Credit Unions Scholar Athlete

Lars R. Johnston from Crocus Plains School in Brandon is the second CIBC Scholar Athlete Award winner.  This grade 12 student maintains a 92% average while participating in golf, volleyball, hockey, curling, badminton and baseball.  Johnston was runner up for the Ed Belfour award this year as the most outstanding player in high school hockey and was also starting setter for the Crocus Plains volleyball team, which captured the Provincial "AAAA" Volleyball Championships.  He also participated in provincial high school golf championships with his team placing third, and skipped his team in the provincial curling championships.  Lars is a peer tutor at school, and has stated…."One thing that I am sure of is high school is going to have some best memories of my life and almost none of them would be possible without my team, my guys, my family…..It is hard to say for me, which I learned more from, academics or athletics.  Sure I can tell you about various equations, but can that compare to being able to describe what several thousand hours in and outside of a gym with your team, all in the end coming down to one single feeling of being the best and knowing that you earned it."
