A graduate of Grant Park High School (1990), Byron’s specialty was track and in particular the long sprints & middle distance track events. He went from setting records in high school, to participating in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona (4x400m), 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria (400m, 4x400m), 1995 & 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg (800m & 4x400m) and 1999 World Championships in Spain (4x400m). In the provincial high school Track and Field championships, he was a triple winner in both 1989 and 1990. He was also the MHSAA High school Athlete of the Year in 1990. While at the University of Manitoba Byron went to four CIS Championships, setting three Canadian records in the process. In 1995 he set, and still holds, the 600- metre Canadian and CIS record and was also part of the record setting 4 x 800m relay team (7:29:23). Both marks still stand today.
