Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Athlete of the Week

The Powerland Urban High School Athletes of the Week are Kiera Shwaluk & Shayne Nichols of the Portage Saints Fast Pitch team.

Kiera a catcher, and Shayne a pitcher, led the Portage Collegiate Saints to their 5th straight Zone 4 title and to a silver medal at the Provincial Championships, where they both received Provincial All-Star recognition. This is their 4th straight zone banner. Leading up to the provincials, Kiera led the Saints with a 0.630 batting average, including 40 runs and 40 RBIs in 18 games. Shayne pitched 16 games with only 1 loss and struck out 92 with only 15 walks and an ERA of 2.1. She also batted 0.588 with 35 runs and 26 RBIs. Coach Cam Asham states, “Shayne and Kiera both play a huge role on our team. They are great players, great leaders, and great young women. They have been members of 4 zone championship teams and 3 provincial championship team to this point in their careers.”

Both in Grade 12, Kiera maintains a 91% academic average, while Shayne maintains a 90% average.  Kiera also participates in hockey, while Shayne participated in Volleyball.
