Kalyn Warner of Roseau Valley School in Dominion City has been selected as SUBWAY Rural Coach of the Month for November. She began at the school in 2011 and took on coordinating the girls basketball program that was in its beginning stages. Her work in that school year carried over to the 2012/2013 school year, where she took on the JV and varsity girls and worked with them as an entire group to build some continuity in the program. She even took on running grade 7 & 8 basketball practices after school, to begin a more stable grassroots program. She is also the head coach of the varsity girls volleyball team and has increased athlete success in that program as well.
Kalyn doesn't just teach the girls about basketball; she teaches them about responsibility on the court and in the classroom. She has created a culture of accountability with the student athletes she works with. She has made outstanding connections with the student athletes she works with as well. She also coordinates tournaments, including a 10 team volleyball tournament at RVS, that was a extremely positive event for all of RVS. She will also be taking the lead in hosting the JV Boys provincials here at RVS this year.
