Christy Steeves of Stonewall Collegiate was presented with the Nick Laping Leadership Award.

Christy has been teaching and coaching at Collège Stonewall Collegiate for 22 years. She has been an integral part of the Stonewall Physical Education program and a huge part of developing and coaching a variety of the athletic programs the school has to offer. She has coached volleyball, basketball (both girls and boys), and track and field at her time at the Collegiate.

She has also been an integral part of Zone 5 and Zone 3 athletics, has served many terms on the MHSAA board of directors, has run the MHSAA Captains Leadership Workshop for student captains of high school sports teams where she taught them the leadership skills needed to have successful seasons. She has also ran the MHSAA’s inaugural Safe Sport Champions Workshop this past February, and leads the Link Leaders program at Stonewall where she helps older students learn the leadership skills to be positive role models in the school for the younger students in the school. This group is responsible for orienting the Grade 9 students in the early days of their high school experience at Collège Stonewall Collegiate.

Christy has a passion for coaching basketball, and this has been evident in her commitment to coaching many basketball teams over the years at Stonewall. Some years she has even coached both the school’s JV girls and varsity girls teams so they would have a coach to play. Over the last two years she has also coached and developed the rural TAP (Targeted Athlete Program) East program through Basketball Manitoba giving rural athletes from the region and community the opportunity to develop their basketball skills and compete in spring tournaments.

She has served as a basketball referee, hosted Provincial Championships, tournaments, and conference play-offs over the years. Her commitment and dedication to high school sport is incomparable, and the dedication shows in the success of the programs she is a part of. Christy is an outstanding role model for students, student teachers, her colleagues and other coaches and females in sport. She leads by example seamlessly, is very composed, and she has a presence that brings out the best in the athletes she works with. She is someone who displays integrity, hard work, and class in everything she is involved with and is a true example of a leader. Christy has now started her administration journey as a Vice Principal at Collège Stonewall Collegiate, while she is still actively coaching and teaching some Phys. Ed classes.
