AAAA Boys Athlete of the Year

Colson Smith of Garden City Collegiate maintained an academic average of 87% and was a graduating honour roll student while participating in hockey, golf, baseball, and ultimate. He was the captain of his hockey team, named an MHSAA Athlete of the Week, was the Husky Classic Tournament MVP, and ranked number one in Winnipeg Free Press Coaches Poll for boys high school hockey. Colson was named the WHSHL MVP, selected to the league’s all-star game and won the scoring title in the league’s top division. Colson was named as the recipient of the 2023 Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Players Choice Award at the AAAA Provincial Hockey Championships, where he was also named an all-star. He is the captain of his baseball team that has won back-to back Provincial Baseball Championships. He is the starting catcher, pitches, plays middle infielder, and was named an all-start at the 2023 Provincial Baseball Championships. He had the low score at the KPAC Golf Championships, volunteers and furthers his learning through workshops on mental health, indigenous perspectives, and youth in sport. He delivered hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board and assisted with MTS PD Day. He is a rookie hockey coach for the school and was involved in the Safe Talk workshop for suicide alertness, peer group support for mental health and wellness, the was a Moose Hide Campaign participant and MMIWG2S ally. Colson plays on the 17U Team Manitoba baseball team that participated in the Canada Cup in Niagara Falls, is the starting catcher of the College Prep program through the Home Run Sports Training Centre. He played for the 7oaks Raiders in the MMJHL, assist a 11U community baseball team, and is a volunteer for the Learn to Skate program. Colson will be attending South Suburban College in Chicago where he will be playing baseball.
